(CIVIL WAR.) Broadwell, C.M. A fine description of Gettysburg.

"SUCH CARNAGE I NEVER BEFORE WITNESSED . . . THEY SKEDADDLED FOR VA" (CIVIL WAR.) Broadwell, C.M. A fine description of Gettysburg. Autograph Letter Signed to friend Libbie Irish of Keeseville, NY. 3 pages, 8 x 5 inches, on one sheet; with stamped cover. Morrisville, VA, 18 August 1863

  • Notes: The author was a lieutenant in the 1st United States Artillery, but his given name was Commodore McDonough Broadwell (1843-1922). Six weeks after Gettysburg, he sent this description to a hometown friend: "The ball opened in earnest, and of all the thundering and howling and schreaming and whizzing and whistling of cannon and shott and shell and musket balls that I ever heard in my life, it was there at the Battle of Gettesburgh. . . . The rebs had 112 pieces of artillery playing on us at once, and we weren't far behind them. After we had fired away all of our ammunition except the canister, the rebs formed 3 lines and charged bayonetts on us, but we were ready for them, and when they came within 2 or 3 rods of us, opened on them with canister and such carnage I never before witnessed, but they broke and ran like sheep, and the 4th they skedaddled for Va., and us after them."
