- Notes: In retaliation for the killing of John Rodgers Meigs (which at the time was believed to have been unprovoked) Sheridan ordered towns in Virginia to be burned. The entire episode triggered a fair amount of controversy. This letter is of interest also for its information regarding a secret service agent.
