    Johnston (1807-91) Confederate General, commissioned as a Brigadier General after leaving the U. S. Army when Virginia seceded, his accomplishments at the first Battle of Bull Run led to his promotion in command of Northern Virginia, assigned to command Confederate forces in Tennessee and Mississippi in 1862, commanded the Confederate retreat to Atlanta, surrendered to Sherman.
