(CIVIL WAR.) [Noble], William H. Long colonel's letter with an illustration of brigade headquarters in Jacksonville.

(CIVIL WAR.) [Noble], William H. Long colonel's letter with an illustration of brigade headquarters in Jacksonville. Autograph Letter Signed 'William' as colonel of the 17th Connecticut Infantry, to his wife. 16 pages, 10 x 8 inches, on 4 folding sheets stitched together; condition strong though the handwriting is difficult. Headquarters, 1st Brigade, Ames Division, [Jacksonville, FL], 8 March 1864

  • Notes: William H. Noble was colonel of the 17th Connecticut Infantry, and at that point serving as commander of the first brigade of Adelbert Ames's division in Jacksonville, FL. This letter includes Noble's long ruminations on slavery: 'To toil for a man who buys of the government his industry is but a mockery of freedom. Sambo has the same right & must be treated like any other human, and not as if his skin hid under its somber hue a different nature, or a soul governed by different impulses' (page 5). It may be most notable, though, for his charming and detailed sketch of the brigade headquarters in Jacksonville, including staff tents, cooks, the stable, and the brigade flagstaff.
