(CIVIL WAR.) Pair of scarce travel handbooks for Union soldiers. Two pamphlets, each about 5 x 3 inches; minor wear as described. Various places, 1864-1865

  • Notes: "The Soldiers' Directory for New York." 4 pages, 5 x 3 inches, on one folding sheet; vertical fold and minor soiling. Offers practical advice to soldiers traveling through New York on furlough. It warns of scam artists who get soldiers drunk or give false directions in order to rob them; gives detailed directions for transit to points east, west and north; and gives pointers on lodging and support for sick soldiers waylaid in the city. No other examples traced in OCLC, at auction, or elsewhere. No place: Ladies of the Battery Barracks Library Association, "with the approbation of the Sanitary Commission," [1865].

    "The Soldiers' Almanac for . . . 1865 . . . Containing Military Directory for St. Louis and Memphis." 40 pages. 16mo, 4¾ x 3¼ inches, original printed wrappers; stitch holes, moderate foxing. Urges soldiers to avoid the saloons and gaming houses of St. Louis, otherwise known as "Satan's palaces," and make their way to church. Offers "instructions to discharged soldiers," a directory of military and aid offices, and more. One in OCLC (Library of Congress) and none traced at auction.
