(CIVIL WAR.) PINKERTON, ALLAN. Autograph Letter Signed, to John W. Swindell, thanking him for returning $5 and sending him 3 of his novels so that he may "learn how hard it is for criminals to escape." 1 1/4 pages, single 4to sheet, Pinkerton's National Detective Agency stationery; folds. Chicago, 31 March 1877

  • Notes: "... You understand it was not my money I was disburseing [sic], but that of the party who prosecutes, and this is the first time in my life - not excepting Texas - the money has been returned to me - to every state in the Union I have paid fees and no questions asked... Please accept 3 of my volumes, they will help to while away a short time when you are at leisure, and learn how hard it is for criminals to escape..."
Pinkerton (1819-84) established one of the first private detective agencies in 1850, foiled a plot to assassinate Lincoln in 1861, and organized a secret service and counter-espionage agency for the Union army in 1862. Autograph Letters Signed by Pinkerton are quite scarce.
