(CIVIL WAR.) Sheppard, Edwin. Map Showing the Battle Grounds of the Chickahominy, and the Positions of the Subsequent Engagements in the Retreat of the Federal Army Towards James River and All the Other Points of Interest in Connection with the Siege of Richmond. Lithographed folding map showing Richmond, VA and vicinity to the east between the Pamunkey and James Rivers. 19x23 3/4 inches sheet size, wide margins; light staining and small separations at fold intersections, pencil sketch and ink presentation inscription to verso. Richmond: Hoyer & Ludwig, [circa 1862]

  • Notes: Scarce separately-issued Confederate map showing the March-July 1862 Peninsula Campaign in southeastern Virginia, the first large-scale operation of the American Civil War. General George B. McClellan may have possibly succeeded in capturing the Confederate capital at Richmond during this campaign had Joseph E. Johnston not been replaced by the more tactically sound Robert E. Lee as General. Lee managed to reorganize his army and repulsed the Union troops from the city, keeping it safe for another two years. The verso of this map bears an interesting, somewhat poignant ornamented inscription from a Confederate infantryman to a Union Colonel many years after the war: "To my esteemed friend Colonel R. Bruce Ricketts. Thomas Graeme/Wilkes Barre/Saturday 30 March/A.D. 1907".
