(CIVIL WAR.) Smith, Green Clay. Who Caused the War?

(CIVIL WAR.) Smith, Green Clay. Who Caused the War? Letterpress broadside, 21 1/2 x 17 inches; 2 repaired closed tears, moderate dampstaining, light wrinkling. Concord, NH: McFarland & Jenks, February 1864

  • Notes: Casts blame on Copperheads including ex-President Franklin Pierce for encouraging Southern extremists. Quotes a January 1860 letter sent by Pierce to Jefferson Davis warning of war: "If through the madness of northern abolitionism, that dire calamity must come; the fighting will not be along Mason and Dixon''s line merely. It will be within our borders in our own streets." The broadside concludes that traitors "deserve death and should be hung summarily, as a terror to those who shall live after us."
