Soldiers' News-Letter, an unrecorded issue of a camp newspaper from near New Orleans.

Ship Island, MS, 24 May 1862
Volume I, #3. 4 pages, 9 x 5¾ inches, on one folding sheet; folds, foxing, minor wear.

  • Notes: This field-press camp newspaper was issued at Ship Island off the coast of Mississippi, which was captured by Union forces in December 1861.

Includes a 20 January 1862 letter from John Ericsson, designer of the USS Monitor, in which he proposes the name "Monitor" for "the floating battery at Greenpoint" and explains his reasoning. Much of the issue relates to the recent capture and administration of New Orleans.

OCLC shows only 2 issues: 10 and 17 May. We trace no other examples of this Issue #3.

Provenance: papers of William W. Rockwell of the 31st Massachusetts Infantry, which was stationed at Ship's Island in March and April 1862; Poulin's Auction, 3 November 2024, lot 4045.
