(CIVIL WAR.) Southern Illustrated News.

(CIVIL WAR.) Southern Illustrated News. 8 pages, 16 x 11 inches, disbound; foxed. Richmond, VA, 25 July 1863

  • Notes: An important weekly which attempted to play the role of a Confederate Harper's. This issue is most notable for its account of the recent Battle of Gettysburg (4th page, 2nd column), which is spun as a Confederate triumph. Lee "had gained a great victory, and captured thousands of prisoners. He had fallen back to Hagerstown at his leisure, in the most perfect order. The Yankees had not dared to pursue him." The editor also complains about the newspaper reportage: "the most astounding lies were telegraphed to the cities. . . . The people seemed to take the Yankee lies for gospel."
This was the first issue of the Southern Illustrated News after news of Gettysburg reached Richmond. They explain that no paper was issued the previous week because "the government took possession of the Richmond and Petersburg railroad for military purposes, and prevented the arrival of our usual supply of paper." Also featured are a large ad for a new Stonewall Jackson biography, and an illustrated cover story on Confederate general William Loring.
