(CIVIL WAR.) The Daily Evening News.

NEWS OF LINCOLN'S DEATH REACHES GEORGIA (CIVIL WAR.) The Daily Evening News. 2 pages on one sheet, 16.5 x 12 inches; some wear at folds, paper fault in upper right corner. Macon, GA, 26 April 1865

  • Notes: Featuring a belated first report of the assassination of Lincoln, who had been shot fifteen days earlier. Macon had just surrendered to Federal troops six days before, and the Confederate newspaper editors had apparently left town. The Daily Evening News was quickly launched to fill the news vacuum with a somewhat pro-Union perspective. No editor or address is given for this newspaper, but they announced that it could be purchased "at $2.00 per copy in Confederate money, or 5 cents in specie."
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries'' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
