(CIVIL WAR.) $1,000.00 for $1.00, a Camp Chest Filled with Silver.

(CIVIL WAR.) $1,000.00 for $1.00, a Camp Chest Filled with Silver. Letterpress broadside, 12 x 9 1/2 inches; minor toning and wear at edges. Philadelphia: King & Baird, [June 1864]

  • Notes: An advertisement for the Great Central Fair held to benefit the United States Sanitary Commission. Each visitor could pay a dollar and "vote for their favorite general." The winning general would get a chest filled with a thousand dollars worth of camp silver. This broadside does not give the surprising results, but Grant received 16 votes, McClellan had 10, and Philadelphian David B. Birney won with 308 votes. Birney soon contracted malaria at Petersburg and was dead within the year.
