  • Notes: Colonel E. Elmer Elsworth organized a regiment of New York City firemen as the First New York Zouaves (later the 11th New York Volunteers). After arriving in Washington, D. C., the regiment was dispatched to Alexandria, Virginia where Ellsworth climbed the roof of a hotel to remove a Confederate flag and was confronted and shot by the hotel keeper. The first Union casualty of the war, Ellsworth's death triggered an outpouring of grief in the North.

The original gilt-edge morocco album with a brass clasp accompanies the lot. A complete list of the images is available upon request.
