CLARENCE JOHN LAUGHLIN (1905-1985) The Disease of Pride.

CLARENCE JOHN LAUGHLIN (1905-1985)
The Disease of Pride. Silver ferrotyped print, the image measuring 13¾x10¾ inches (35x27.3 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, the mount 17x14 inches (43.2x35.5 cm.), with Laughlin's signature, title, and negative date in white pencil on mount recto and his credit address stamp with the print number I-3 and a numeric notation 5402 in pencil and a Neikrug Gallery Inc. stamp, on mount verso. 1949; printed 1970s

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Laughlin's surrealist composition is in very good to excellent condition. The surface of the print is lustrous and contrasty, with bright highlights and densely packed details.

The surface of the ferrotyped print evidences some of the surface inconsistencies associated with that process. However, the inconsistencies - except for a faint fingerprint as a result of handling in the background behind the sitter or a cluster of faint vertical creases in the lower quadrant - are primarily confined to the edges of the image and visible only under strong raking light.

The print is mounted to a black mount which is in excellent condition.
