Charleston, 29 January 1980 E600/900 ". . . Not only was the drafting of men stopped, but the registration was discontin-ued, and the machinery, including draft boards were dismantled . . . The voluntary system of enlistment does not provide the number of men we need for our armed forces during a difficult timelike this when we are threatened in vari-ous parts of the world . . . Russia has vowed over the years to destroy America . . . Iran is beingled by a religious fanatic, whom I hope will disappear from the scene soon . . . China is not a strong country militarily . . . [the Russians] will grab a hold of Afghanistan; then I believe they will sit back and grab off more of the free world at a later date . . . Thebest investment the United States can make is to get strong immediately by building up our military strength."
