COLERIDGE, SAMUEL TAYLOR. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.T. Coleridge," to "My dear Sir" [Dr. De Prati?],

COLERIDGE, SAMUEL TAYLOR. Autograph Letter Signed, "S.T. Coleridge," to "My dear Sir" [Dr. De Prati?], reporting that he was not able to return his book, explaining he had only just completed Red River after a fortnight of misery, complaining that many make demands upon him without knowing his misery, and sending his good wishes. 3 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; faint uneven toning overall, edges of terminal page reinforced, remnants of prior mounting at corners of terminal page. Highgate, 14 Oct[obe]r 1828

  • Notes: ". . . I myself barely emancipated from the Red River, yclept Erysipelas--which at length had the grace to come forth with modest Blush, after having occasioned me a most miserable fortnight of torpid despondent Days, and affrightful nights, Dreams having been in fact the worse Realities of my Life.
"Alas, my dear Sir! It is an additional Thorn to the Quickest Hedge of my Lot, that I am so generally talked of as being well off--so happily situated in the enjoyment of affectionate Friends, a beautiful Country, Philosophy, and all the Muses, of in short, an enviable Man! The sick, anxious, embarrassed Man, constantly forced off either by ill health or the necessity of the ToDay, from completing the Works to which the Studies and the Aspirations of more than half his Life had been devoted, and preserved from actual privations only by obligations to Friends . . . of this man they know nothing! . . ."
Published in Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ed. Griggs, vol. 6.
As his opium addiction worsened, Coleridge moved into the home of Dr. James Gillman in Highgate, remaining there for the rest of his life.
