THE BEST CATALOGUE OF AFRICAN AMERICANA (COLLECTING.) HEARTMAN, CHARLES F. Americana, Printed and in Manuscript. A Most Interesting Collection. 223 pages, tall 8vo, original printed stiff wrappers, listing 2280 items. Biloxi, MS, [1948]

  • Notes: a rare and important catalogue, from one of the deans of americana dealers. The cover of this remarkable assemblage reads: ''While there is an emphasis on the subject of Negro and Slavery, most such items are of interest otherwise.'' An understatement for certain. Heartman, it seems, felt he needed to explain that these nearly 2300 items of black history represented American history too. This catalogue is a must for anyone interested in the subject. I paid homage to Mr. Heartman in last year''s catalogue. One can actually learn a great deal about Black history by simply reading this catalogue. I did.
