In 1784, 'a number of gentlemen subscribed a few thousand pounds, as a fund for assisting some destitute blacks, then in London, to settle at Sierra Leone . ' From the Report. This plan to clean up the streets of London via an ill-conceived and even worse follow through, led to the deaths of over 200 of the original 460 persons shipped back to their native land.' The report tells of the successes and failures of the subsequent groups that emigrated.
