[19] (of [20]), 154, [6] leaves, including engraved title (mounted); lacks blank 5*4. 4to, late 18th-/early 19th-century 1/2 sheep gilt, spine worn, chipped at top; contents browned, marginal dampstaining on opening leaves, clean tears in C1 and 2O4, the latter with crude partial repair, lacks front free endpaper. Paris: Matthieu Guillemot, 1600 [i. e., after 1610]

  • Notes: first béroalde de verville edition of one of the most famous illustrated books of the Renaissance; later issue, with headpiece on *2r and 2Q3r incorporating arms and crowned monogram of Louis XIII, thus published after 1610. "It is this edition, with its new title-page and preface, which formally introduces the work into the literature of alchemy" (Mortimer). Colonna's enigmatic dream narrative was originally published in 1499 in Latin as Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Harvard/Mortimer-French 148.
