(COLOR and RACE.) Tanner, Benjamin Tucker. The Color of Solomon--What? "My Beloved is White and Ruddy."
Frontispiece. 8vo, rebound in a facsimile of the original cloth. Philadelphia: A.M.E. Book Concern, 1895
- Notes: first edition. The monograph is a discussion of Solomon drawn from the Song of Songs and the allusion to both Solomon's color and that of his "black but comely bride." Tanner (1835-1923) became the 18th Bishop of the AME Church. He became radicalized by Jim Crow and the lynch law, urging Negroes to be self-sufficient through education. Unlike Booker T. Washington, he favored separatism over compromise.
