COMPLETE SET HOUGH, ROMEYN B. The American Woods exhibited by Actual Specimens and with Copious Explanatory Text. 14 volumes, containing 354 cards complete with all specimens. 8vo, publisher's cloth chemises and cases with metal hinges and clasps, the text in wrappers as issued, the specimens on the original card mounts unbound as issued; some minor warping to the mounts, very few of the wooden samples with cracks, overall in remarkably good condition. Lowville, 1894-1928
- Notes: complete with the scarce 14th volume issued by Hough's daughter after his death. This set a mixed edition, including 8 sections from the First Edition and the remaining from the second and third printings. This remarkable work by Hough is without question the definitive study of American wood types. Arranged geographically, each plate shows the paper-thin wood specimens in traverse, radial and tangential sections. Besides being of enormous utility for the identification of various woods, the beauty of each sample is self-evident. Hough himself referred to the work as "an exhibition of nature itself." Due to the delicate nature of each plate and the number of years between the first and last parts, the set is rarely found complete and in such fine condition.
