  • Notes: Andrew Thompson Judson (1784-1853) was a politician from Canterbury, CT who served briefly as a United States Congressman, but is most known for his role in two racially charged court cases. As a prosecutor In 1835, he successfully argued for the closure of Prudence Crandall's short-lived school for girls because it promoted "amalgamation of the races." On the other hand, he was the presiding judge in the 1840 Amistad case, and ordered the release of the African captives on the grounds that they were born free. This collection includes letters to and from Judson, none related to the court cases, but including a detailed document on the parsonage house in Canterbury signed by 20 parishioners. Inventory upon request. with--5 later family papers.
