(COOK, JAMES, Captain.) Anderson, George William; editor. A New, Authentic and Complete Collection of Voyages Round the World . . . Containing an Authentic, Entertaining, Full, and Complete History of Captain Cook's First, Second, Third and Last Voyages. 153 (of 156) maps and plates. 655, [5] pages. London: Alex Hogg, 1784[-1786?]
- Notes: first edition, first state. This important compilation of voyages was originally issued in 80 parts, leading to numerous variants. Accounts of Cook's three voyages fill most of the volume, but pages 215 to 398 are devoted to the voyages of Byron, Wallis, Carteret, Mulgrave, Anson and Drake. This volume is from the first state as described by Forbes, with the 1784 publication date on title page, the frontispiece dated 1784, and the caption title on page 5 reading "A Genuine and Complete History of the Whole of Capt. Cook's Voyages." "Anderson sometimes gives the original accounts, others are edited or abridged versions, and frequently additional materials from other sources are added to give scope and depth to the narratives"--Hill 18; "An early and important collected edition of Cook's three voyages"--Forbes 61. Beddie 17-19.
