Cooke, Captain Edward (fl. 1710)
A Voyage to the South Sea and Round the World, Perform'd in the Years 1708, 1709, 1710, and 1711.

London: Printed by H.M. for B. Lintot & R. Gosling, A. Bettesworth, and W. Innys, 1712.

First edition, octavo, illustrated with three folding plates (including maps) and seventeen full-page plates that include depictions of sea and land mammals, birds, plants, indigenous peoples, charts, maps, and more; bound in modern paneled calf, period style, ruled in blind compartments and sprinkled, spine ruled in gilt with morocco lettering piece; 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.

"Edward Cooke was second captain on board the Dutchess, the ship which accompanied the Duke, both under Captain Woodes Rogers, on a privateering voyage around the world. The account by Rogers does not contain the translation of the Spanish manuscript describing the west coast from Tierra del Fuego to California, here profusely illustrated with woodcut outlines of the land, nor does it contain the large number of maps and plates of Cooke's narrative. It is generally accepted that Daniel Defoe used this account of Alexander Selkirk's years on Juan Fernández Island for his Robinson Crusoe, as it was the first book containing it."
