CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927) Booker T. Washington.

CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927)
Booker T. Washington.

Silver print, circa 1908. 235x171 mm; 9 1/4x6 3/4 inches. With the artist's stamp, "C.M. Battey, Tuskegee Inst., Ala., Copyrighted," in the negative, lower right.

Washington founded Tuskegee Institute in 1881 as a place to educate African Americans in industrial and mechanical training. He died in 1915, one year before Battey become the head of the institute's first photography department.

  • Condition: This highly-stylized portrait of Booker T. Washington is done in the Pictorialist tradition that separates Battey from other portrait artists of the era. There is silvering around the edges due to age. There are also three stray pen marks along his nose, in the space in between his eyebrows, and in between his nose and upper lip. There is a chip in the surface at the extreme outer left edge of the photograph. Otherwise, this is a very good, clean photograph.
