(COSTUME--FABRIC SAMPLE BOOK.) Salts (Saltaire) Limited. Fabric sample book from the mills at Saltaire owned by Titus Salt, including over 2500 mounted samples of his patterns in wool. Thick large folio, contemporary 1/2 morocco, very worn but cords holding; fore-edges a bit ragged, samples in excellent shape. Saltaire, West Yorkshire, last quarter 19th century

  • Notes: Saltaire was founded by Titus Salt in 1851 as a model village for his work force. The name derives from Salt's name and the River Aire where the new town was located. Salt moved his 5 woolen mills from West Yorkshire and set up his new enterprise which was one of the largest woven wool manufacturies in the United Kingdom. Saltaire is now listed as a World Heritage site.
