(COSTUME--SCOTLAND.) Vestiarium Scoticum. 76 plates (including 75 mounted and glazed color plates of tartans). Small folio, publisher's morocco with a gilt armorial crest, covers detached, lacks the backstrip; a few tissue guards sticking to plates but removable; ex-library, with a stamp to the title but the plates unmarked. Edinburgh, 1842

  • Notes: Based on a supposedly lost manuscript found by John and Charles Hay Allan (who used the name Stuart as a pseudonym), many of these "newly-discovered" tartans were later debunked. Nevertheless, the work is a wonderful depiction of Highland tartans, with vivid color plates. Hiler, page 876.
