(COSTUME / THEATER.) MAX RÉE. Large unfinished watercolor and pencil sketch of a theatrical costume

MAX RÉE.
Large unfinished watercolor and pencil sketch of a theatrical costume on tracing paper, showing a showgirl with elaborate headdress, umbrella and drapery. 890x450 mm; 35x17 1/2 inches. Horizontal folds and several creases due to fragile paper. Signed in pencil lower right.

  • Notes: Rée was a Danish-born costume designer who moved to the United States as a costume designer for Max Reinhart. He came to New York as a set and costume designer for such classic flapper-era productions as Earl Carroll's Vanities and Music Box Revue. He also designed covers for The New Yorker, 4 of which were published in 1925.
