(COSTUME / THEATER.) RAOUL PÈNE DU BOIS. An archive of original illustrations and studies primarily for Sugar Babies,

RAOUL PÈNE DU BOIS.
An archive of original illustrations and studies primarily for Sugar Babies, the 1979 Mark Hellinger Theatre Broadway production starring Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller. Contains watercolor drawings, numerous sketch books with pen, ink, crayon sketches with working notes, typed letters signed by backers and theater managers, Pène du Bois's copies of the printed scripts (some of Extra Scenes) and stage production notes. Mostly late 1970s.

  • Notes: Highlights include 8 watercolor and gouache costume studies for the production on 15x11 inch sheets * 3 watercolor stage sets with cut outs to show background changes * 3 notebooks from productions in France and the U.S. with working drawings, etc. * Among the letters is a TLS by Beverly Sills thanking him for the show and requesting a meeting (22 August, 1980). A fun and comprehensive archive of the prolific theater designer's creative output. Should be seen.
