COUNTEE, SAMUEL. Oil portrait of Nathan Bishop, Founder of Bishop College. 40 x 35.25 inches. Handsomely framed. Np, circa 1933-35 E1, 000/1,500 African-American artist Countee painted this portrait in mid-19th century style on artist's board, then treated it to give "crackle" effect of an older painting. Nathan Bishop (1808-80), very active in the Underground Railroad, founded Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. After over one hundred years of educating black students from the West, the college closed its doors in 1984. [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
