COURT MARTIAL ORDERING PRISONERS WHIPPED HANCOCK, JOHN. Autograph Endorsement Signed, as Governor, approving the sentences levied by a garrison court martial against several convicts held on Castle Island, "I do approve of the above sentence of Court Martial, and Order that it by put in execution tomorrow morning at Eight O'Clock." 3 pages, folded tall 4to sheets; usual folds, minor browning, minor separations along folds. Boston, 3 August 1790

  • Notes: The court martial consisted of two cases. In the first, Robert Steward, John Pain and Ebenezer Root plead guilty to concealing themselves with the intent to escape and are sentenced to "fifty stripes on their naked Backs." In the second more complicated case, several prisoners are accused of setting fire to the prison, and after a discussion of the testimony of several witnesses, John Kinney is found guilty and sentenced to "100 stripes on his naked back."
