CRAWFORD, RALSTON (1906-1978) Untitled (House for Rent, N.O.L.A).

CRAWFORD, RALSTON (1906-1978)
Untitled (House for Rent, N.O.L.A). Silver print, 10x13 1/4 inches (25.4x33.7 cm.), with Crawford's estate stamp and notations, in ink, in an unknown hand, on verso. 1966

  • Notes: From the Robert Miller Gallery, New York; to the present owner in 1988.
The back of the frame has a Whitney Museum of American Art label indicating that this photograph was exhibited in the "Ralston Crawford Photographs" show, at their Fairfield County Branch, in 1985.
While Ralston Crawford is known as an accomplished painter of American industrial landscapes, his keen painterly eye resulted in elegantly crafted photographic images. He sought inspiration from New Orleans' lively jazz musicians, colorful street life, and Gothic cemeteries. The shadows cast on this house some 40 years ago seem particularly prescient and eerie given the present condition of the town once known as "the Big Easy."
