Group of approximately 110 mug shots of middle-class African-Americans, most of whom were arrested on charges of "illegal lottery" (running numbers); with more than 30 of women. Ferrotyped silver prints, 3 1/2x4 1/2 inches (8.9x11.4 cm.), most with a hand stamp and the subject's name, address, crime, and identying physical characteristics typewritten on verso. 1963-1964

  • Notes: A curious collection of photographs taken in Philadelphia the year of, and immediately after, Kennedy's assassination and the emergence of the Civil Rights era. The subjects depicted were largely apprehended for running numbers in an illegal lottery played in metropolitan areas.
