  • Notes: One of Rhode Island's most controversial trials. Late in 1832, a Fall River factory girl named Sarah Cornell was found dead in a barn, victim of an apparent suicide by hanging. Then a note was found among her possessions: "If I should be missing, enquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery of Bristol, he will know where I am." Avery was widely considered to be guilty of murder, but was acquitted.
