(CRIME.) A Faithful Report of the Trial of Doctor William Little... for an Assault and Battery, Committed upon the Body of His Lawful Wife, Mrs. Jane

(CRIME.) A Faithful Report of the Trial of Doctor William Little... for an Assault and Battery, Committed upon the Body of His Lawful Wife, Mrs. Jane Little, a Black Lady.

24 pages. 8vo, contemporary wrappers; early owner's signatures. Shaw and Shoemaker 14983. New York, 1808

  • Notes: Dr. Little, a white doctor, was married to his African-American wife by an "African preacher" in 1807. He started beating his wife soon after. At his trial, his defense attorney argued that this "incivility was rather a dissembling of love than an effect of hatred." The argument was compelling enough that Jane Little dropped the charges against her husband and walked arm-in-arm with him from the courtroom. If justice wasn't done at that moment, it followed soon after when "they had a pretty severe battle, which terminated in favour of the mistress, the Doctor having suffered some loss of blood, and a contusion of the nose."
