(CRIME.) New Red Lion Vigilance Association by-laws and broadside. "By-Laws of the New Red Lion Association," 8 pages, 8vo, contemporary mottled wrappers, minimal wear * "New Red Lion Vigilance Association District List," illustrated letter-press broadside, 12 x 9 1/2 inches, folds, minor foxing. West Chester, PA, 1864; and np, circa 1868-71

  • Notes: The New Red Lion Association for the Detecting of Thieves and Recovery of Stolen Property was incorporated in 1864, with the very specific goal of catching horse thieves in eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. In an era before telephones, they organized rapid-response teams in a chain of towns which would ride out to the countryside in pairs, making inquiries and distributing reward handbills. The broadside illustrates this with a dramatic woodcut of two members in hot pursuit of a villain, yelling "Stop, thief!"
The broadside is undated and has been assigned an 1830-50 date range by the Hagley Library on the basis of the engraver Gilbert. However, the members listed below all seem to be born between the 1820s and early 1840s, with the youngest man traced being Charles H. Swayne (1843-1919), and the first known to be deceased being Phineas Lamborn in 1871. This places the date between the 1864 incorporation and 1871. As the broadside adds a Baltimore district and several younger members to those listed in the 1864 by-laws, the latter end of that range is suspected. WorldCat lists one copy of each; none are known at auction.
