(CRIME.) Pair of wanted posters for notable Jewish gangsters. Flegenheimer: 8 x 8 inches, with 1 x 3-inch area torn out from upper corner, inked note in right margin, fold as issued; postmarked in Birmingham, AL and addressed to sheriff of Iuka, MS on verso. Shapiro: 16 x 10 1/2 inches; folds, printed but not addressed on verso. Both signed in type by J. Edgar Hoover. Washington, 19 November 1934 and 8 November 1937

  • Notes: Arthur Flegenheimer, better known as Dutch Schultz, was a numbers racket boss who irked mafia leaders in 1935 when he declared his intention to kill a troublesome United States Attorney. He was soon killed by two hitmen in the employ of "Murder, Inc.," led by Jacob Shapiro and Louis Buchalter. The first of these posters shows Flegenheimer, giving numerous aliases including Dutch Schultz. The second shows Shapiro and Buchalter in 1937, both wanted for violations of antitrust laws. Shapiro is described as "Speech, very gutteral, Jewish accent . . . gesticulates with hands when speaking."
