(CRIME.) The Manheim Tragedy. Complete History of the Double Murder of Mrs. Garber and Mrs. Ream: With the only Authentic Life and Confession of Alexander Anderson Published by H. A. Rockafield in T rust for the Benefit of Anderson's Wife and Children. Two engraved illustrations. 8vo, original printed pictorial wrappers (rear showing the actual murder); small diagonal chip from upper right corner of front cover. Lancaster, Pennsylvania: Office of the Evening Express, 1858 E350/500 FIRST EDITION. Grisly account of a double murder by 2 black youths in Manheim, Pennsylvania in 1857. While intoxicated, they entered the home of Mrs. Garber where she was being visited by her friend Mrs. Ream. The 2 youths all but dis-membered the 2 old ladies, and then rifled the house searching for money-this by their own confession-to buy more liquor. Alexander Anderson, apparently whose idea it was to rob the women, made a full confession, asking the local paper's publisher to take down his own words and print them in pamphlet form to benefit his wife and children. The 2 men were hanged after a brief trial. McDade, 7; not in Blockson or Schomburg Collections; Sabin 72374 (second edition). [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
