Cross Out Slums. 1941 40 x 30 inches. U. S. Government Printing Office. Condition A: horizontal fold: minor tears and creases at edges. Paper. Reusing a concept first employed by Willi Baumberger ina 1927 exhibition poster for a show on Modern Dwelling, Baumberger drew a bright red "X" through a photograph of a Victorian parlor Beall, innovatively, takes the concept one step further adding an additional photomontage within the hand crossing out the slums. This powerful visual rejection of Depression Era/Dust bowl shanties in favor of larger, newer residences brought "the clean asymmetry of Bauhaus design into everyday life in this country long before Gropiusand Mies van der Rohe were given an opportunity to do so in architecture" Word & Image p. 6.
