first edition. with a clipped signature of cruikshank and an als by crowquill. Arthur Crowquill was the pseudonym used by Charles Robert Forrester and his brother Alfred (used separately and together). The letter, to an unknown recipient, is tipped to the front endpaper. It states that the book, written 45 years ago, was not illustrated, but only engraved by Cruikshank as Crowquill did not then engrave, and that the pseudonym of Kosewitz was a joke. 1 page, folded 8vo sheet, dated 19 January 1872. Forrester's obituary is tipped to the inside fold.
