Cruikshank, George. The New Union Club. Being a Representation of what took place at a Celebrated Dinner.

Hand-colored engraved caricature, 14x20 1/2 inches; trimmed close to the neat line, with a few nicks and short tears at edges; reinforced on verso where once folded and along one edge. London, 1819

  • Notes: One of Cruikshank's most racist images. Here he depicts an opulent dining room where members of the Anti-Slavery Society entertain a crowd of rowdy and drunk blacks. On the walls are various paintings depicting scenes from Haiti, etc. An enormously complex piece with many famous British reform figures painfully caricatured.
