Cunard, Nancy, editor. Negro Anthology. Made by Nancy Cunard 1931-1933 Profusely illustrated. Large, thick 4to; drab olive green cloth-covered boards cut flush with the page-edges; light rubbing to extremities, few small stains to the boards; some very slight marginal foxing. In all, a fine, firm copy. London: For Nancy Cunard and Wishart & Co, 1934 E6500-8500 First Edition Of One Of The Most Ambitious And Scarcest Of All The Harlem Renaissance "High spon., Apparently an advance copy, since the pages measure 9-.125 inches in width versus other copies which measure 9.5 inches, and the nondescript, green linen binding with no attempt at a spine, rounded or squared; simply cloth covering the gatherings. Nancy Cunard, the rebel expatriate daughter of a well-to-do English family, first came into contact with the Negro world in Europe when she became romantically involved with the musician Henry Crowder in 1927 while He was touring with Eddie Scott's South Alabamians. A pamphlet on her affair with Crowder titled Black Man, White Ladyship 1931, got her disinherited-though briefly. It is really because of Crowder that we have Cunard's Anthology. Beginning with Langston Hughes's beautiful poem I Too Sing America, ' the Anthology represents a virtual 'Who's Who' in Negro arts and letters, as well as a signifcant representation of prominent white writers who contributed in the spirit of the advancement of Negro accomplishment, in America as well as the West Indies, South America, Europe and Africa.
