CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG. Autograph Letter Signed, "Armstrong" to his friend John Bulkley, regretting that he has declined a position on Custer's staff, arguing that no experience was necessary for the post, praising Captain Green and concerning mutual acquaintances. 3 pages, folded 8vo sheet; two minor tape repairs at folds. With the original envelope. "Headquarters 2nd Brigade / 3rd Div Cav Corp A. P.", Summer 1863?
- Notes: "Your letter declining my offer is just recd. I cannot find fault with your decision as I think everyman knows best how to promote his own interests. I do not think the fact of your being without experience is or should be regarded as any obstacle to your entering the service particularly in the capacity of A.D.C. which does not require an accurate knowledge of details and routine, so much as an energetic active disposition. However you have decided otherwise and as you say may be 'for the best.' Capt. Green is becoming well posted in regard to his new duties and is rapidly becoming one of the most efficient Adjt Generals I ever saw. I could not have obtained his equal anywhere... "
