Brodovitch was a key figure in the development of 20th century graphic design. He emigrated to Paris from Russia and it was there that he first established himself as a graphic designer. He moved to New York in 1930 and took over the job that would turn him into a legend: Art Director for Harper's Bazaar magazine. The work he did in Paris in the 1920s is slowly coming to prominence. He designed at least two other posters for Donnet, which was the fifth largest car manufacturer in France in the 1920s. This poster was originally printed in 1928. Brodovitch's image featured blue cars, and less text, as the poster was advertising only the Donnet 6 cylinder vehicle. Two years later, with more models available, the company reissued the poster, removing Brodovitch's initials. On the 1930s edition all of the red and blue have been reversed, not only on the cars, but also in the text and the border. Memoire de la Rue p. 365 (var), 1er Salon 70.
