Serge Diaghilev founded the Ballets Russes in 1909 and premiered with a revolutionary show and first season at the Theatre Chatelet, which transfixed Paris and transformed the artistic landscape. For years they performed at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees and were on the cutting edge of all the artistic disciplines, featuring music by Stravinsky, sets and costumes designed by the best Cubist artists and performances by some the greatest ballet dancers of all time. In 1917, at the suggestion of Jean Cocteau, Diaghilev commissioned Picasso to design the sets and costumes for Parade. His image for the costume design of the Chinese conjurer became an emblematic logo for the troupe. We can date this poster from the fact that Massine worked as the choreographer for the Ballets Russes from 1915-1921 and Parade was staged in 1917.
