DAN CONCHOLAR (1939 - )
Untitled (Abstract Still Life).

Oil on linen canvas, circa 1970. 914x762 mmn; 36x30 inches. Signed in oil, lower right.

Provenance: private collection, Oregon.

This Cubist composition is a scarce, early painting by Dan Concholar, a Californian painter, printmaker, educator and gallery director. Born in San Antonio, Concholar moved to Los Angeles while in high school, and later enrolled at the Otis Art Institute. There he took classes with Charles White, and befriended David Hammons and Timothy Washington. Also a contemporary of John Outterbridge and John T. Riddle, Jr., they all showed at Alonzo and Dale Davis' Brockman Gallery in 1970-71. Concholar also exhibited at Gallery 32 and Ankrum Gallery, as an art instructor at the Watts Tower art center and a member of the Black Arts Council.

Concholar's art and a time capsule-like suitcase of his were included in the important 2011-12 traveling museum exhibition Now Dig This! Art & Black Los Angeles 1960 - 1980 curated by Dr. Kellie Jones. This is the first work of this artist to come to auction since the sale of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company's art collection at Swann Galleries on Oct. 4, 2007. Jones p. 326.
