  • Notes: first edition, in Freeman's binding variant "a," of the record of one of the most significant expeditions in the history of science. The first volume, by Philip Parker King, describes the 1826-30 surveying voyage of the Adventure and Beagle along the southern coast of South America. The second volume is FitzRoy's account of the 1831-36 voyage of the Beagle to South America and around the world. The third volume is the first issue of darwin's first published work, the journal of his experiences and observations during the second Beagle voyage, "now famous as the genesis of his theory of evolutionary biology" (Hill).
