This early gouache was made at an early turning point of the young artist''s career. In the summer of 1953, with the assistance of his professors James Herring and Löis Mailou Jones, Driskell was accepted at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture where he studied with Jack Levine, Herny Varnum Poor, Sidney Simon and Leonard Bocur. In the same year, he was greatly inspired by the exhibition of African art assembled by his mentors James A. Porter and Herring at Howard University, and the exhibition of Contemporary African Art at the Harmon Foundation. David Driskell, following in the steps of Porter, became the great artist, educator, curator and collector at Howard University.
