DAVID LACHAPELLE (1963 - ) LAVAZZA / ESPRESS YOURSELF. 2002
67 3/4x46 inches, 172x117 cm. RCS, Paris.
Condition A-: creases at edges.
Lachapelle, a fashion and fine art photographer and director, was given his first professional job by Andy Warhol. His photographs, with their saturated colors and extravagant layouts, which seduce viewers as they skirt the borders of surrealism and kitsch, have also attracted the attention of many major companies. Lavazza selected Lachapelle to shoot photos for their 2002 calendar (the idea of art calendars sponsored by corporations was begun by Pirelli, and Lavazza began their calendar campaign in 1993). The company went on to release these images in a format large enough for French bus shelters--in which size they are arguably even more sensational.
