(DE LÉOTARD, GENEVIÈVE; Binder.) Dunoyer de Segonzac, André. Dessins sur les Danses d'Isadora Duncan.

(DE LÉOTARD, GENEVIÈVE; Binder.) Dunoyer de Segonzac, André. Dessins sur les Danses d'Isadora Duncan. 6 in text and 20 hors text (1 double-page) delicate line drawings of Duncan by Dunoyer de Segonzac. 4to, bound in a fine art deco binding by geneviève de léotard, signed 1931, of polished rose calf with a vertical grid of pointillé gold and brown dots bisected by a silver line extending from the top of the rear panel which contains a similar but smaller 1-inch vertical grid panel along the outer edge, spine stamped in gold and brown, some rubing to spine ends, tips, and portions of spine where binding threads sewn underneath; lavender silk moiré endleaves and raised panel doublures continuing silver line design, marbled paper blanks, top edges trimmed and gilt; chemise and slipcase (worn), likely also by de Léotard as the marbled paper used matches that of the blanks. 260x212 mm; 10 1/4x8 1/2 inches; original wrappers bound in. Out-of-series copy from a recorded edition of 32. Paris: A la Belle Édition, (1911)

  • Notes: a lovely and scarce binding by geneviève de léotard, master of avant-garde book design. In the Golden Age of Art Nouveau and Art Deco bookbinding, de Léotard's designs stood out for their extreme linearity, modern materials, and graphic style, characterized by sharp combinations of overlapping or diverging lines interspersed with grids of lines or pointillé dots, all of which are exemplified in this binding.
